Toolless Cat6A Zinc Alloy Shielded RJ45 Field Termination Plug
This Cat6A RJ45 connector is a toolless, zinc-alloy, fully shielded field-termination plug for FTP and STP cable. It is not a two-piece crimp crystal head. There is no load bar to stuff and no 8P8C die to buy. The installer lays conductors into a color-coded manager, folds the cap, and closes the zinc housing until the IDC punches through the insulation. The same motion bonds the foil or braid to the die-cast shell so the shield is continuous from cable to jack.
System integrators and electrical contractors search this part as a Cat6A field termination plug, tool-free STP RJ45, or MPTL connector. Those buyers are not building factory patch cords. They are landing a horizontal Cat6A run directly on a wireless access point, a dome camera, a ceiling AP, or a control panel — a Modular Plug Terminated Link. Category 6A (Augmented Cat 6, ISO/IEC Class EA) is specified to 500 MHz and is the TIA workhorse for 10GBASE-T to 100 m. Field plugs in this class must also survive Power over Ethernet heat, including 4PPoE / PoE++ up to 90–100 W at the PSE. Gold 8P8C contacts and a tin IDC block are sized for that current. The zinc can is the EMI can: it stops alien crosstalk in a cable tray and it is the ground path for FTP/STP foil.
How Field Termination Beats a Crimp Plug on Site
A crimp 8P8C needs a calibrated die, a precise conductor OD, and a one-shot crimp. Get the braid fold wrong and the cord is scrap. A toolless Cat6A plug uses IDC: each conductor sits in a labeled slot (T568A on one side of the manager, T568B on the other), the cap hinges shut, and the zinc cover latches or screws down. Many crews close the last millimeter with ordinary pliers — still no RJ45 crimp tool. If pair 3 and 6 are swapped, the cap opens and the plug can be re-terminated a few times. That is why MPTL specifications and wireless-AP vendors call out field plugs, not crystal heads.
The housing is nickel-plated zinc alloy. Inside: a PC wire manager (often glass-filled), tin-plated IDC, and an 8P8C nose with phosphor-bronze contacts, 50 µin gold over nickel. Typical ratings: 1.5 A, contact resistance ≤ 20 mΩ, insulation ≥ 500 MΩ, dielectric 1,000 VDC, 750 mating cycles, operating −40 °C to +70 °C or better. Cable window is usually 23–26 AWG solid and stranded, jacket about 6.0–8.5 mm — the thick Cat6A FTP/STP that will not enter a cheap Cat5e plug. Confirm your jacket OD against the drawing before a project buy.
FTP, STP, and the earth spring
FTP (F/UTP) has an overall foil. STP / S/FTP adds braid or pair foils. This plug accepts both. A spring or clamp in the strain-relief neck presses foil and drain against the zinc body so the shield does not go open when the cable is tugged. How Contractors and OEMs Should Specify This Part
Write the PO as: Cat6A toolless field termination RJ45, zinc alloy, shielded STP/FTP, IDC, 23–26 AWG, 10G / 500 MHz. Do not write “crystal head” or “Cat7 crimp plug.” Those are different SKUs and will not close on thick Cat6A FTP in a ceiling. For audited projects, ask for a component-level or MPTL sample report, not a marketing 10G claim.
Incoming and field check
Confirm zinc body (magnet test is not reliable — use weight and casting marks), 8P8C gold nose, and a manager printed A and B. After termination: shield continuity from foil to shell; no pin-to-shell shorts; wire map T568A or B as specified; optional certification to TIA Cat6A Permanent Link or MPTL. Reject lots that are plastic-bodied “toolless” Cat5e copies.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I really need no tools at all?
You do not need an RJ45 crimp tool or a punch-down blade. Many zinc covers snap shut by hand; a few designs want parallel pliers for the last click or a screw-down boot. That is still field termination, not factory crimp.
Cat6A or Cat7? Field plug or crimp plug?
Use this Cat6A zinc field plug on site for MPTL, cameras, and APs. Use a Cat7 shielded crimp plug on a patch-cord line with a calibrated die. Do not mix the two on one work instruction.
Will it fit my Cat6A FTP cable?
If the conductors are 23–26 AWG and the jacket is in the 6.0–8.5 mm window, yes for most S/FTP and F/UTP. Oversized 22 AWG Cat7/Cat8 jackets may need a large-OD variant — send a cut sample.
Can I use it on UTP?
Mechanically yes. You lose the shield bond and should not claim a shielded Cat6A channel. For UTP, a UTP field plug or keystone is the cleaner BOM.
Is it rated for PoE++ cameras and Wi-Fi 7 APs?
IDC + 50 µin gold + 23 AWG Cat6A is the usual stack for IEEE 802.3bt. Confirm bundle size and ambient temperature in the ceiling. The plug is signal-and-PoE class, not a power connector.
How many times can I re-terminate?
Typically up to five if the IDC slots are not torn. Cut the cable back and start clean after a wiring error. Do not treat it as unlimited reuse.
Does it pass a Fluke Cat6A MPTL test?
A good termination on qualified Cat6A FTP, with the shield bonded, is designed for TIA-568.2 Cat6A / MPTL. Results depend on cable, length, and workmanship. We can supply a sample report with your cable if you send a drum cut.
